One topic that has consistently come up is the new fees and fines surrounding vehicle registration and insurance. I want to take a moment to set the record straight. These are not a Republican initiative. Governor Granholm, as part of her tax and spend budget of last year, proposed the increases, which have included everything from increases the cost of obtaining a registration to a hefty fine for even the slightest delay in obtaining proof of insurance. These fine and fees represent her continued effort to use targeted tax hikes, which she hopes will go unnoticed by voters, rather than cut waste, inefficiencies and excess from the state budget.
