Yesterday, leaders within the African-American community welcomed President George W. Bush to the National Urban League Conference in Detroit. Also yesterday, we saw a nationwide poll showing a 50% increase from 2000 in African-American support for the President. These are good signs for a campaign, but more importantly for the future of America. People of all races are now seeing that when America’s economy is stronger, with more money in the pockets of families and small businesses, and when more citizens own their homes, then America is stronger.
Under President Bush, we have seen dramatic increases in African-American business ownership and entrepreneurship and all-time record African-American home ownership. These are the keys to a successful future -- not only for African-Americans, but also for all Americans.
Every person - every single one - needs to look at the policies and agendas of the candidates for President. We need to make sure that no one’s vote is taken for granted, that whoever earns American votes - black, white, or whatever - truly earns it because of the actions he takes, not the pledges he makes.
