ICYMI: Siding With Schumer Again, Peters Cuts Off Police Reform Debate

Peters claims to be bipartisan but continues record of siding with Schumer 95% of the time, stopping police reform package from moving forward in the Senate Gary Peters maintained his record of siding with Sen. Chuck Schumer’s partisan political agenda 95% of the time by casting a vote to stop debate and oppose the police reform package that was on the floor of the US Senate last week. Despite Sen. Peters’ claim to be open to bipartisan action on police reform, Sen. Peters sided with Sen. Minority Leader Schumer and 45 Democrats to oppose the police reform package, not even allowing an open debate of the policy and related amendments. “Offered the chance to advance vital police reforms in the United States Senate, Gary Peters instead sided with Chuck Schumer and voted to stop any police reform from moving forward. Not only did Gary Peters reject the police reform package, he voted with Chuck Schumer to stop any debate on police reform from occurring. When it comes to choosing between making progress for Michigan or opting for partisan political games, Gary Peters sides with Chuck Schumer every chance he gets. Gary Peters doesn’t vote with Michigan, he votes with Chuck Schumer,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. More >

Whitmer Admits to Mishandling of COVID-19

Today, in an interview with WWJ Radio, Governor Gretchen Whitmer admitted she mishandled the state’s COVID-19 shutdowns. During the pandemic, Whitmer has allowed some businesses such as strip clubs to remain open while others, including gyms, have had to close. The Michigan unemployment rate currently remains among the worst in the nation, with thousands of residents still unable to access assistance from the state’s unemployment agency. This morning on WDET, Whitmer conceded that she also poorly handled COVID-19 in nursing homes, after placing patients who tested positive for the virus in facilities with staffers and other patients who were negative. The governor received bipartisan criticism on her policy for extended care facilities, with deaths in nursing homes accounting for over a third of the state’s deaths from the virus. Whitmer has rejected calls from both state and federal Oversight Committees to cooperate with investigations on her handling of the virus in nursing homes. “Now that Gretchen Whitmer admits she was wrong, what is she going to do to remedy these situations?” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “Those who have lost loved ones or lost their livelihoods deserve answers. Whitmer needs to stop skirting her commitment to transparency and cooperate with our elected representatives trying to get Michiganders the answers she won’t provide.” More >

The Walls Close in on Whitmer

This week, both state and federal oversight committees requested vital information from Governor Gretchen Whitmer that led her to turn Michigan nursing homes into COVID-19 hubs, mixing negative patients and positive patients in the facilities. On Thursday State Rep. Matt Hall and State Sen. Aric Nesbitt, of the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic, sent a joint letter to Gretchen Whitmer requesting additional information on the handling of the virus in extended care facilities. They also reminded the governor of a possible move to subpoena if she did not cooperate. In similar fashion the U.S. House Oversight Committee on Government Reform, in conjunction with Michigan’s Republican Congressional Delegation, sent a letter requesting Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel investigate Whitmer’s handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes. The letter states the clear guidelines Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) put in place. Despite these guidelines, state authorities and the governor herself failed to keep nursing homes up to standards, and even worse, sent patients who tested positive for the virus to facilities with worse than sufficient standards. “It’s time for Governor Gretchen Whitmer to be held accountable and answer questions about the decisions she made.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “Too many Michiganders have been effected by these decisions for Gretchen Whitmer to skirt transparency. Governor Whitmer needs to do the right thing, provide this information, and testify before the Michigan Legislature the same way she did before Congress.” More >

Hey, Gary— Do You Support Whitmer’s “Idiotic” Nursing Home Plan? Seniors Need To Know

Detroit-area Democrats are abandoning Gov. Whitmer’s dangerous COVID-19 nursing home plan, but Gary Peters is so afraid of taking a position that he hasn’t even put out a press release about it Frightening statistics about the COVID-19 nursing home death rate in Michigan are driving more Democrats to abandon support of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order requiring the facilities to accept COVID-positive patients, yet U.S. Senator Gary Peters remains afraid to take a position on the life-or-death issue. Detroit’s WDIV-TV reported that Michigan lawmakers passed SB 956, which overrules Whitmer’s flawed orders sending COVID-19 patients into nursing homes. These facilities are where approximately 34% of all Michigan COVID deaths have occurred, including the deaths of at least 1,947 patients and 20 workers. Two Detroit-area Democrats, Sen. Dayna Polehanki and Sen. Paul Wojno, abandoned Whitmer’s orders by voting to pass the bill. (Roll Call #229) They join another Democrat, Rep. Leslie Love, who previously said Whitmer’s requirement that nursing homes accept COVID-positive patients is “the most idiotic thing we could come up with.” Peters, however, is nowhere to be found. “Gary Peters is a 30-year politician who loves to arrive at the scene of a problem after it already occurred, but he is so afraid of this one that he hasn’t said a thing,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. “Michigan families and seniors are looking for leaders, not someone who perpetually sends out press releases filled with proposals and promises after the fact.” “Take a stand, Gary. Whitmer Knew of Coronavirus in February

Governor Continued Ahead with Political Rallies in State’s Hotspots LANSING, Mich., June 25, 2020 — Governor Whitmer’s latest magazine profile with The New York Times Magazine revealed her Chief Medical Executive Joneigh Khaldun warned Whitmer of possible cases of COVID-19 in Michigan in February. Dispute the warning, Whitmer carried on with widescale political rallies in the run-up to Michigan’s Presidential Primary – hitting the campaign trail for former Vice President Joe Biden. While Michigan’s neighboring states were reporting cases, Governor Whitmer carried on with campaigning. Knowing of the possible threat back in February from one of her top health advisors, Gretchen Whitmer failed to properly prepare Michigan’s unemployment agencies, hospitals, nursing homes, and retailers. Whitmer has received bipartisan criticism for turning nursing homes into COVID-19 hubs, and not properly staffing Michigan’s UIA for the surge ahead. Furthermore, Whitmer blamed the federal government for their response, despite the significant actions taken back in January. Whitmer has since taken part in an upward of 50 late-night shows, cable TV shows, magazine profiles, and national interviews slamming the president even with her own delayed action. The Trump Administration took swift action in the wake of coronavirus, providing extensive aid and support to Michigan. Governor Whitmer then misled and lied about some of that aid in the early days of the virus spreading through the state. “Instead of preparing our state for the looming COVID-19 crisis, Gretchen Whitmer was more worried about Joe Biden’s primary chances here and auditioning to be his running mate,”... Peters Caught Lying About Military Pay Raises During Virtual Fundraiser

Peters cast at least six votes against bills containing military pay raises Some politicians try to get away with lying about their records in private but Gary Peters is breaking new ground. He’s doing it live— virtually. In a June 16th virtual fundraiser, Peters was asked which issues he may be attacked on during his campaign for U.S. Senate against combat veteran John James. Peters, noting he has been criticized for voting against military pay raises, responded by saying, “I’ve never voted against a pay raise for service members.” But the Washington Free Beacon exposed Peters’ lie. They reported yesterday that Peters “voted against pay raises for service members six times from 2015 to 2016. He voted three times in 2015 and another three times in 2016 to block Defense Department funding bills that would have raised service members' pay by 2.3 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively.” “The 2016 bill Peters voted against passed the Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously and was praised as ‘bipartisan’ by Wisconsin Democratic senator Tammy Baldwin. ‘I especially appreciate that this bill conforms to the bipartisan budget agreement and refrains from gimmicks that not only shortchange non-defense priorities, but also our military,’ Baldwin said at the time,” according to the Free Beacon. MIGOP Chairman Laura Cox says that, “Gary Peters should apologize to Michigan military families for lying and playing politics with their income, especially while he is collecting two government paychecks from their tax dollars.” More >

Knowing the Danger Ahead, Whitmer Sent COVID-19 Patients to Ill-Equipped Facilities.

Back in March, Governor Gretchen Whitmer was warned by experts of the risk that COVID-19 posed in nursing homes. These experts also requested that patients who have tested positive for the virus be sent to vacant centers to avoid exposing both negative patients of the most vulnerable population, and the workers in these care centers. Despite these warnings, Whitmer turned some of the state’s most ill-equipped facilities into COVID-19 hubs. In Michigan, 34% of coronavirus deaths stem from infections in nursing home facilities. New reporting from The Detroit News now reveals that nearly half the nursing homes selected by Governor Whitmer to serve as COVID-19 regional hubs received below-average quality ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Whitmer has received bipartisan criticism for her policies that have led to the spread of COVID-19 among nursing homes. Last week, GOP Whip Steve Scalise requested additional information from Governor Whitmer on her handling of the virus in nursing homes, among other governors whose states have similar COVID-19 rates in nursing homes. Whitmer declined to provide any additional information – even after requesting further federal assistance for Michigan. "The facts plainly show that Governor Whitmer has failed miserable in her handling of this crisis. And our nursing homes and state's seniors have dearly paid the price," said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. "Governor Gretchen Whitmer must be held accountable for her actions which have hurt so many Michiganders, and that starts with the governor releasing her office's internal documents... More >

Gary Peters Must Finally Explain Why He Ignored The China Accountability Committee

Peters failed to hold himself accountable when he dodged WXYZ-TV, just like he failed to hold China accountable despite promising Michigan otherwise Gary Peters must finally explain to Michigan families why he broke his promise to hold China accountable for economic and human rights abuses when he failed to show up for a special Congressional committee dedicated to holding China accountable, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox said today. Asked about the missed meetings over the weekend by WXYZ-TV in Detroit, Peters dodged the question in a cloud of words only a 30-year politician could spin. ‘Honored to serve’— unless it means showing up In Congress, Peters has repeatedly promised families that he would stop China from illegal and immoral practices that are damaging Michigan’s economy and America’s security. In fact, when he was appointed to the Congressional Executive Commission on China in 2015, Peters promised Michigan workers that he would be the Senator to finally hold China accountable for its economic misdeeds: “I am honored to serve on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, where I will work to hold China accountable for unfair trade practices and currency manipulation, so that American companies and American workers can compete on a level playing field,” said Senator Peters. “I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Commission from both parties to make sure that China plays by the rules and meets their commitments to follow international trade agreements and make progress on protecting human rights.” Peters breaks his promise to... Whitmer Requests Federal Assistance but Rejects Federal Request for Transparency

Yesterday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer rejected a request from Congressman Steve Scalise regarding her administration’s handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes. There have been 7,137 confirmed COVID-19 cases in nursing homes as well as 3,100 cases among the facilities’ staff. At least 1,979 nursing home residents have died of the virus - a third of the confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Michigan. In March, experts warned Governor Whitmer of the risks that COVID-19 posed to nursing homes, requesting that Whitmer put positive patients in separate facilities to avoid the risk of spreading the virus. Earlier in the month, Whitmer testified before a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, slamming the federal response to coronavirus and requesting additional aid and assistance from the federal government. Yet when Scalise wrote Whitmer last week asking for additional information regarding her decision making, she refused his request. Whitmer has also rejected calls to testify before the Michigan Legislature and has broken her campaign pledge to extend Freedom of Information Act requests to the governor’s office. “Sunlight is an amazing disinfectant, yet when it comes Governor Whitmer’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis, she has intentionally kept the people of Michigan in the dark,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. Cox continued, “Michiganders deserve answers as to how and why this situation became so dire despite numerous warnings, and the Federal government must know how the money it provided to our state has been used.” More >

Peters Fails to Address His Absence at the Congressional Executive Commission on China

Will Peters Admit Where He Was that He Missed 89% of the Meetings where He Promised “to Work to Hold China Accountable”? MRP Chairman Laura Cox asked Gary Peters to explain to Michigan voters why he missed 89% of the meetings where he promised “to work to hold China accountable”. When responding to the John James ad on Peters failing to hold China accountable, Peters did not even address being on the committee although he still sits on it 5 years later and has failed to attend 89% of its hearings. In February 2015, when appointed to the Congressional Executive Commission on China, Peters promised to hold China accountable. In the announcement release, Peters said, “I am honored to serve on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China where I will work to hold China accountable for unfair trade practices and currency manipulation, so that American companies and American workers can compete on a level playing field," But when asked by WXYZ Detroit, Peters’ office responded, "As Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee and member of the Armed Services Committee, Senator Peters has a strong record of standing up for Michigan whether it’s holding China accountable for unfair trade practices or working to boost American manufacturing to create jobs in Michigan and take back production of life-saving drugs and medical supplies. Attempts to distort that record are simply misleading.” Peters’ response never mentions the Congressional Executive Commission on China once. “Peters owes an explanation to Michigan voters why he failed to attend 89% of the meetings...
