Cox Calls on Whitmer to Testify about Nursing Home Deaths

The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox regarding today's shocking story in the Detroit News detailing that 34% of Michigan's COVID-19 deaths have been nursing home patients. Governor Whitmer has received criticism for her policy, which moved COVID-19 positive patients into homes with unaffected residents during the height of the pandemic. "Due to Governor Whitmer's failed policies regarding nursing homes, nursing home residents make up more than 34% of those who have lost their fight to the COVID-19 virus. These shocking numbers come even though nursing home residents comprise less than 1% of Michigan residents. Our state's most vulnerable citizens should have never been placed in harm's way, and the Governor needs to testify in front of the state legislature about her decision making during the COVID-19 crisis immediately." Flashback 2016: Peters Voted To Cut $82 Billion For Veterans

Peters talks about his military reserve status but voted against veterans and military funding six different times as he started his first term in the U.S. Senate The Michigan Republican Party today revealed that U.S. Senator Gary Peters repeatedly voted to cut veterans and military funding during the 2016 election cycle— something he is not talking about as he runs for reelection this time around. During the 2015-2016 budget negotiations, fresh after being sent to Washington, D.C. by Michigan voters, Gary Peters voted six different times against veterans and military funding. That’s including his vote to cut $82 billion in funding for Veterans Affairs and military programs, despite overwhelming bipartisan support. (H.R. 5325, Roll Call Vote #150: Passed 72-21, 9/28/16) Research shows that Gary Peters has a track record of touting his military reserves status in the U.S. Navy, but then playing politics with funding for key veteran and military programs. For example, while a member of the U.S. House in 2010, Peters was forced by Democrat leadership to pull a “politically unpalatable” amendment he introduced which would have slashed funding for veterans housing. (Politico, 7/30/10) “Gary Peters talks about signing up for the military reserves, but he has repeatedly sought to slash key veterans and military funding that Michigan voters entrusted him with. Gary Peters has a record of cutting our military and not supporting Michigan veterans,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. "John James understands the importance of supporting our military and veterans and will always stand... More >

Cox: Whitmer Owes State Police an Apology

On Tuesday, in an Instagram interview with The Root reporter, Terrell Starr, Governor Gretchen Whitmer agreed with the idea that if armed black protestors were to demonstrate at the Michigan Capitol, they would be killed by law enforcement. Despite the derogatory comments, just two weeks prior – BLARE (Blacks and Latinos Against Racist Empowerment), held a peaceful demonstration at the Capitol exercising their First and Second Amendment rights. Whitmer’s inflammatory comments were not only derogatory to those demonstrating at the Capitol, but were heightened due to her support for the “spirit” of the “defund the police” movement. These statements come even though the Governor has a law enforcement detail that protects her at both the Capitol and at her residence. “Governor Whitmer’s comments are not only insensitive to so many, but they are completely out of touch to the police protection that keeps her safe day in and day out,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “Gretchen Whitmer owes an apology to the hardworking men and women who protect her and our state’s elected leaders. I hope that, moving forward, Governor Whitmer is more mindful of her comments so that we can all work together as a society to fix the difficult issues at hand.” More >

Gary Peters: Six Years in the Senate, Six Years Failing to Enact National Criminal Justice Reform

Career politician Gary Peters produces no results for us, but continues to profit from us U.S. Senator Gary Peters, who has failed to deliver for Michigan despite a nearly 30-year career on the taxpayer dime, is once again trotting out his failed National Criminal Justice Commission proposal despite the fact he has never been able to achieve results. Peters has been in office since 1995 and is collecting a $50,000-per-year state pension, at the same time he is paid $174,000 for his federal position. Even though he’s padded his pockets, he’s otherwise failed to make this commission a reality during his six years in the U.S. Senate. But that is not stopping him from attempting to take advantage of the current crisis gripping America by claiming he did something about criminal justice reform. (Peters introduces bill to create commission to overhaul criminal justice system, WNEM, 6/4/20) Instead of achieving actual results, Peters simply hit copy-and-paste in reintroducing the same failed National Criminal Justice Commission bill in 2015, 2017 and 2019. “Gary Peters is a 30-year politician who is only skilled in the tricks of the trade. Proposing study commissions that go nowhere and issuing press releases about it when it benefits him has left Michigan empty-handed, even as Peters profits from multiple government paychecks each month,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox. “Michigan doesn't need six more years of press releases and commissions. We need leaders who get results, like John James. When it comes to criminal justice reform, Gary Peters is a costly failure... More >

Do Michigan House Democrats Agree With the “Defund the Police” Movement?

As protests across Michigan call for defunding police departments, State Representatives have been silent on the “movement” that seeks to strip funding and support for the law enforcement authorities that keep us all safe. On Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, said she supports the “spirit” of the “Defund the Police” movement. While Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the movement “makes no sense” and is “extremely flawed”, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it’s a “local matter”. “First it was ‘abolish ICE’, and now it’s ‘defund the police’. These calls to dismantle our law enforcement authorities that protect our communities are dangerous.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “No one denies that the death of Mr. Floyd was incredibly tragic, and that the actions of the arresting officers were completely abhorrent. As a former law enforcement officer myself, I recognize the need for policing and criminal justice reforms. However, the calls to defund the hardworking men and women keeping us safe is a step too far, and Michiganders deserve to know if those asking for their vote agree.” Do the following Michigan Democrats running for State Representative agree with defunding the police? Rep. Kevin Hertel, Rep. Laurie Pohutsky, Rep. Matt Koleszar, Rep. Nate Shannon, Rep. Mari Manoogian, Rep. Padma Kuppa, Rep. Sheryl Kennedy, Rep. Jim Haadsma, Rep. Angela Witwer, Rep. Brian Elder. Whitmer Agrees that Black Protesters with Guns at Capitol Would Have Been Killed by Law Enforcement

On Tuesday, in an explosive Instagram interview with reporter Terrell Jermaine Starr, Governor Gretchen Whitmer agreed with the idea that if armed black protestors were to demonstrate at the Michigan Capitol, they would be killed by law enforcement. However, just two weeks ago, a group of African American and Latino activists took advantage of their right open carry firearms at the state Capitol without any incident. At the peaceful May 28th rally held by BLARE (Blacks and Latinos Against Racist Empowerment), armed protestors called for an end to hate between the races, better education for law enforcement, and for society to be more gun-friendly. Whitmer’s inflammatory comments were part of the same interview in which she voiced her support for the “spirit of” the defund the police movement. A movement that has successfully persuaded the Minneapolis City Council to disband the city’s main law enforcement branch. “Whitmer’s inflammatory statement about risks to armed African Americans at the state Capitol is not only defamatory to the men and woman of law enforcement who protect her, but it’s also blatantly false.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairwoman. Cox continued, “Yet again, Governor Whitmer has demonstrated that she is willing to do anything, and say anything, to capture the national spotlight and appease her progressive base in her quest for the Vice Presidency.” More >

ICYMI: Peters Failed to Hold China Accountable

Senator claimed he would hold China accountable but skipped 89% of Congressional hearings on committee that holds China accountable Peters ad makes false claim that he has been tough on China Despite promising Michigan residents in 2014 that he would hold China accountable and repeating the claim in a recent television ad, U.S. Senator Gary Peters skipped 16 of 18 hearings (89%) held by the Congressional Executive Commission on China (CECC). The CECC, to which Peters was appointed in 2015, seeks to “monitor human rights and the development of the rule of law in China, and to submit an annual report to the President and the Congress.” Peters attended only two meetings. “After making campaign promises in an election year, Gary Peters failed to do his job. Gary Peters was entrusted to help lead a committee that holds China accountable but failed to protect Michigan residents because he skipped 89% of the hearings,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “Gary Peters is not holding China accountable and his promises to do so are nothing more than an election year lie to the people of Michigan meant to cover up his record.” “In the real world, people who don’t show up for work get fired, and that is what Michigan voters will do to Gary Peters this November.” After being elected to the U.S. Senate, Peters was appointed to the Congressional Executive Commission on China and has missed 89% of the meetings. Congress created the CECC to hold China accountable on issues of law, human rights, economic regulations, and commercial disputes. Commission membership... More >
