Where Do Michigan Democrats Stand on Biden’s Divisive Statements?

Earlier this week, Michigan Democrat Party Chair Lavora Barnes received criticism for calling millions of Michiganders racists because they support Donald Trump. Barnes doubled down on the statements on Monday, and thus far leading Michigan Democrats, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Gary Peters, have been silent on the inflammatory remarks. None of this comes as a surprise, however, as they’ve also failed to address Democrat nominee Joe Biden’s long history of bigoted comments and policy decisions that have been detrimental to the African American community. In 1977 then-Senator Joe Biden worried that de-segregation would cause his children to grow up “in a racial jungle.” In 1987, Presidential Candidate Biden boasted about receiving an award from George Wallace and said Delaware was on the South's side in the Civil War. In 1994, Senator Biden was on “the front line” of advocating for policies that led to mass incarceration and referred to black youths as “predators.” In the 2012 Vice President Biden fanned racial tensions by saying Republicans were going to put African Americans “back in chains.” And in 2020, Joe Biden insinuated that black people couldn’t think for themselves when he said, “If you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black.” “For nearly five decades, Joe Biden has backed policies and made statements that are totally unacceptable. Yet Whitmer, Peters, and Barnes have remained silent,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. Cox continued, “It’s time for Michigan Democrats to come to terms with the hypocrisy that lies within their party,... More >

While Protests Rock the Nation, Gary Peters Hides. As protests continue across the state and nation, many political leaders have taken the initiative to call for peace and understanding. On Sunday, Combat Veteran and Detroit Businessman John James joined Fox News in a compassionate plea to stop dishonoring George Floyd by senselessly destroying property. That same day Congressman Fred Upton joined peaceful demonstrators in Benton Harbor. However, Michigan, Senator Gary Peters has yet to appear in public on the issue and instead has simply released a statement. “While peaceful protesters demand justice, and rioters have taken advantage of this tragedy, Gary Peters hides behind a statement, so he doesn’t have to face controversy in an election year,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman “Michigan needs a real leader who will fight for the people, for their constitutional rights, and for the end of violence. Not a career politician like Gary Peters, who puts his head in the sand every time there is trouble.” More >

Cox: Despite Testimony, Governor Whitmer Failed Michiganders

Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer testified to the Congressional Energy and Commerce Committee on Michigan’s coronavirus response. Whitmer was joined by Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and Colorado Governor Jared Polis. Whitmer used the hearing as yet another platform to bash the Trump Administration’s coronavirus response that started back in January before Whitmer herself took any action. Here are the facts on Governor Whitmer’s Botched Coronavirus Response: Governor Whitmer failed to file an initial request for a disaster declaration for the state of Michigan with FEMA, lagging behind dozens of other states. Gretchen Whitmer deepened the panic of the already difficult coronavirus situation by falsely claiming the federal government was diverting supplies from Michigan. The Governor continues to complain that Michigan does not have enough PPE and testing supplies, despite passing on compliant swabs. Whitmer’s over 100 blanketed, and vague executive orders caused undue stress and confusion across the state. Governor Whitmer gave little to no guidance or details on her executive overreach leading to a car seat being banned, among other mishaps across the state. Michigan lagged behind in COVID-19 contact tracing because Whitmer and her administration appointed a known Democrat operative to a no-bid contract for the highly sensitive data project. Despite denying having any knowledge of how and why the contract was executed with the partisan firm, emails show Whitmer’s office gave the green light to put the Democrat company in charge. Whitmer and her administration allowed coronavirus to ravage nursing homes and extended care facilities. The Governor allowed... More >

Barnes Doubles Down While Whitmer and Peters Stay Silent

On Monday, Democrat Party Chair Lavora Barnes doubled down on inflammatory comments in which she insisted that supporters of President Trump are “racists,” and that they are “the reason Black people are being murdered for being Black.” Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox then called the comments “unacceptable,” Barnes responded by telling the press that it was Cox’s job “to listen, not speak.” In response, Cox issued the following statement: “I refuse to stay silent while 2.3 million Michiganders are accused of being racists and bigots. Unfortunately, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Gary Peters cannot say the same. Our state is hurting, and their party chair is working to drive a deeper wedge, instead of working for unity. Is it now the official position of the Michigan Democrat Party that anyone who disagrees with their left-wing progressive agenda is a racist? If so, this is truly a sad day for American democracy and political discourse in our state. Michiganders deserve to know if their governor and junior senator agree with this position.” More >

Do Whitmer and Peters Stand by Barnes?

Yesterday, Michigan Democrat Party Chair Lavora Barnes released a statement calling supporters of President Donald Trump, “racist” adding “you are the reason Black people are being murdered for being Black.” The inflammatory remarks were renounced Monday afternoon by Michigan Republican Chairman Laura Cox in an email to supporters. Within hours of Barnes incendiary remarks, Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement calling for unity but made no mention of Barnes blanket statement calling over 2 million Michiganders racist. This begs the question, do prominent Michigan Democrats like Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Gary Peters condone such statements? “As peaceful protests have degraded into looting and violence, we must come together as Americans to bring about positive change. Lavora Barnes calling over 2 million Michiganders racist only fans the flames,” said Laura Cox, Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. Cox continued, “As representatives for all Michiganders, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Gary Peters must condemn Lavora Barnes' statement immediately. It is time to put the people of Michigan above politics.” More >

Cox: Barnes Remarks Unacceptable

On Monday, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox sent the following statement to Republicans across Michigan defending against inflammatory remarks released by Lavora Barnes, Chair Michigan Democrat Party. In the comments, Barnes stated, "If you support Donald Trump, you are a racist. Here is where it gets tricky and uncomfortable. Donald Trump is a racist, and if being a racist is not a deal breaker for you, you are the reason Black people are being murdered for being Black." Cox response: The killing of George Floyd was an incredible tragedy, and the officers responsible for this crime must be held accountable for his murder. Far too often, African Americans receive unfair treatment from law enforcement, and we must do more as a nation to ensure that due process rights are guaranteed for all citizens regardless of race. However, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes calling over 2 million Michiganders "racist" is unacceptable and only makes this tragedy worse. One of the many reasons our nation is great is because, while our two major parties have disagreements, we can look past these differences and come together as Americans. Despite these differences, we fundamentally believe that our fellow Americans are good people motivated by good intentions. Let’s be perfectly clear, there is nothing good about racism. It is a form of pure evil and calling someone a racist is akin to calling that person evil. Lavora Barnes’ remarks claim that millions of Michiganders are evil. It implies that they cannot be reasoned... More >

MIGOP Convention Goes Virtual

Today, the Michigan Republican Party (MRP) announced that they will be holding their 2020 Spring Convention on June 13th and have adopted a virtual format for the convention. Delegates and alternates to the convention will be voting on the approval of Michigan’s at-large delegates to the Republican National Convention. They will also be electing Michigan’s Republican National Committeeman and Committeewoman. The convention, which had been scheduled for April, was moved to a virtual format to protect the health and safety of delegates, alternates, staff and grassroots activists. With little to no clarity from Governor Whitmer as to when she will allow such events to take place, MRP decided to move forward with holding convention in June so that delegates can make proper travel arrangements for the Republican Nation Convention in August. “On June 13, the Michigan Republican Party will show Governor Gretchen Whitmer that no matter how many executive orders she passes, she can’t shut us down.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. Cox continued, “While we had hoped to kick off the 2020 election in a different way, our virtual convention will not only protect the safety of our delegates and alternates, but also help us lay the groundwork to reelect President Trump in 2020. I look forward to leading this historic convention.” More >

Will Peters Call on Whitmer to Release Nursing Home Data?

Yesterday, Department of Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon admitted full data on the state’s nursing home crisis is still unavailable. However, the current data shows that at least 23% of Michigan’s COVID-19 fatalities have been nursing home residents. The Whitmer administration has received increased bipartisan criticism due to their failure to accurately track and report cases among patients and workers in nursing home facilities, which have become “COVID Hubs”. However, Michigan Senator Gary Peters has so far remained silent on the issue. “As a Senator, Gary Peters has a responsibility to stand up to Governor Whitmer and get her to report this critical data.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “Standing by while these facilities become the latest collateral damage in Whitmer’s mishandling of the COVID crisis is simply not an option. Yet, like on most issues that involve a fellow Democrat, Gary Peters is silent. The nursing home patients and employees deserve better. Their families and friends deserve better. Michigan deserves better.” More >

Whitmer Administration Failed Nursing Home Residents

Today, in shocking testimony given to a special Michigan Senate Committee, Department of Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon revealed that at least 23% of Michigan’s COVID-19 fatalities were nursing home residents. Even more shocking, is the fact that the figure given will likely grow due to 13% of the state’s nursing home facilities failing to report. In recent weeks, the Whitmer administration has come under fire for its underreporting of nursing home figures as well as its treatment of nursing home residents. Until May 20, infected residents were moved into nursing homes with non-infected residents who were highly susceptible to the COVID-19 virus. As Deadline Detroit reporter Charlie LeDuff said in a recent article, “The most vulnerable among us are being hauled around like laundry bags in the midst of a pandemic.” “While Governor Whitmer plays politics all over national television, her administration is tragically failing the state’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. Cox continued, “While she has tried to deflect blame, it is clear that her decision to have COVID-19 positive seniors recover in nursing homes with vulnerable non-infected residents had devastating consequences. I applaud the Michigan Senate for trying to get to the bottom of this tragedy.” More >

While Michiganders Struggle, Gary Peters Double-Dips

Since the coronavirus outbreak has hit the state, millions of Michiganders have been laid off as businesses have been forced to close and shutter. With over 20% of Michigan’s workforce out of work, the state is seeing historic levels of hardship. Recently the state has had to move forward with temporary lay-offs and furloughs. The response has put an unprecedented burden on the state of Michigan – soon to face a $3.2 billion shortfall. As Michiganders are struggling, Gary Peters is double-dipping into taxpayer dollars. While Peters is receiving his $174,000 annual salary for being a sitting U.S. Senator – he also continues to collect around $50,000 a year in state pension, with an annual 4% increase from his time in the state legislature. Across the country, those who hold office or seeking to do so have focused on giving back to the community. Combat veteran and Detroit businessman, John James, launched his “Nickel Promise,” which has been helping those in the community since day one of his campaign. “Leaders eat last, and during these difficult times, Gary Peters has once again proven that he is no leader for Michigan,” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. “Now more than ever, our state needs support from Washington, and Gary Peters is unable to deliver. As a job creator and through his ‘Nickle Promise,’ John James has done more for the people of Michigan than Gary Peter has in his decades-long political career, and I can’t wait to see him elected this...
