Schumer and Peters Fundraise While Democrats Block Small Business Bill

Due to overwhelming success and historic demand during the COVID-19 crisis, the $349 billion portion of the Paycheck Protection Program hit its cap on Thursday. While this had been anticipated for over a week, Senate Democrats - including Michigan Senator Gary Peters - continue to block additional funding for the program unless partisan demands are met. Without additional funding, thousands of Michigan small businesses face an uncertain future. However, this has not stopped Peters and Democrat Minority Leader Chuck Schumer from hosting a $1,500 per person minimum virtual fundraiser next Thursday to support Peters’ reelection campaign. The following invitation went out to Peters’ supporters on Thursday: “Yet again, Gary Peters is putting politics above the people of Michigan,” said Laura Cox, Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. Cox went on to say, “While small business wonder where their next check to pay employees is going to come from, Gary Peters and Chuck Schumer will be fundraising with the liberal elite. It’s time for Gary Peters to figure out where his next paycheck is going to come from, because the people of Michigan are going to show him the door this November.” More >

Whitmer Misses The Point

Just hours after thousands of Michiganders descended on the Michigan Capitol to protest her inconsistent stay-at-home policies, Governor Gretchen Whitmer brushed off the event as “just politics’ during another national TV appearance. Yet it’s exactly the opposite. Resistance against Whitmer’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis is growing throughout the state. More than 200,000 people have signed a petition to recall Whitmer, and social media groups against her historic overreach have attracted hundreds of thousands of followers. Michiganders are losing their jobs, businesses are struggling, unemployment is skyrocketing, and Whitmer continues to blame her own constituents for the issues at hand. However, Whitmer has missed the point as hundreds of thousand Michigan residents have spoken out against her policies. Even more troubling is that the governor has never shared a plan or timeline of how Michigan is going to get through this virus and instead, extends inconsistent executive orders that are destroying people’s livelihoods. In her quest to be tapped as Joe Biden’s Vice Presidential pick – Whitmer seeks to lay blame with everyone from President Trump to the people of Michigan for her follies. Yet her own executive orders are causing nothing but confusion and chaos. The restrictions and mandates are so inconsistent and repressive that members of Michigan’s congressional delegation called on her to walk back the order. “Whether it’s blaming her own constituents for speaking out against the struggles they face because of her policies, or falsely accusing the federal government of diverting supplies – it is always everyone’s fault but Governor Whitmer’s.” Said... MIGOP Statement on Gary Peters Endorsement of Joe Biden

The Michigan Republican Party released the following statement on behalf of Chairman Laura Cox regarding Gary Peter’s endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden for President. “Yet again, Gary Peters sat on the sidelines and waited until he was no longer faced with a difficult decision before endorsing a man who had all but wrapped up the nomination over a month ago. Joe Biden and Gary Peters are nothing more than career politicians who love the Washington swamp and do nothing on their taxpayer-funded salaries, while hardworking Americans struggle. I look forward to helping end both their political careers this November.” More >

Those Who Live in a Glass House Should Not Throw Political Bombs

First, it was falsely claiming the federal government was diverting supplies from Michigan. Then, it was failing to properly file federal disaster relief paperwork. Now, it’s blaming political rivals for protests actually caused by her confusing executive orders. Governor Whitmer’s gross incompetence continues to blanket our state at a time when we need decisive leadership the most. Last Thursday, Governor Whitmer extended and expanded her Executive Order No. 2020-42 with great overreach, that left Michiganders and businesses completely confused of what was currently legal and illegal. The new order created chaos, leading to two different retailers banning the sale of car seats, businesses facing unnecessary solvency, and farmers and greenhouses begging Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Agriculture for any kind of guidance. (NBC News)(The Federalist)(WBCK) Yet, instead of simply clarifying the orders or launching a public service announcement to provide clarity and answer citizens’ questions, Whitmer and her staffers were more concerned about social media prowess and Vice Presidential fluff pieces. The Whitmer Administration’s incompetency was then evident once more on Monday, when the state’s Unemployment Agency website crashed (yet again), as over a quarter of Michigan’s workforce is now struggling and forced to file for benefits because of the governor’s overly restrictive executive orders. (WDIV)(Townhall) On Monday during her daily press conference, Whitmer sought to lay the blame for current criticism with the DeVos family, who she falsely claimed were “waging political attacks”. The simple truth is she cannot accept the fact the Michiganders are ready and willing... More >

Whitmer: No Motorized Boats, But We’ll Still Vote.

Whitmer, Benson Proceed with May Elections The coronavirus outbreak has made us rethink many actions in our daily lives to protect ourselves, the ones we love and our friends and neighbors. This morning, it was announced that Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson was still seeking workers to process absentee ballots for the May election – a move that has the ability to yield dangerous results. A majority of election day workers, who are often elderly and retired, are at a higher risk of experiencing the worst of this virus, and Secretary of State Benson wants to continue to move forward regardless. State Senator Ruth Johnson (a former Secretary of State herself), implored Benson not to proceed with the election stating, “We are the new hotspot for this pandemic in the country. These elections should have been postponed until the worst passes and we can give our clerks time to better prepare." At a time when it is considered “unsafe” for Michiganders to purchase home improvement materials and travel from one residence to another, how is it “safe” for Michigan election workers to needlessly expose themselves to the virus? “I am very thankful for Senator Johnson’s leadership on this issue. While we are in a challenging time of working to protect each other, it’s important that we don’t spread this virus.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. Cox continued, “With another election scheduled just months away, there is no reason that the upcoming May ballot issues cannot be decided... More >

Michigan Legislature Seeks to Forge Ahead in Rebuilding

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey announced that the Michigan Senate would be creating a taskforce seeking to reopen Michigan for business. The bipartisan taskforce will evaluate next steps in easing the current regulations that the governor’s executive orders have imposed for businesses across the state. Senator Shirkey, a small business owner himself, has his Jackson business, Orbitform, currently in the process of creating a sanitization system for N95 masks. The Michigan Chamber of Commerce and National Federation of Independent Businesses applauded Shirkey’s move that seeks to safely reopen certain businesses across the state, while still adhering to social distancing and non-essential travel guidelines. “I would like to thank Majority Leader Shirkey for his initiative in seeking to get Michigan’s economy re-opened and back on track.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. Cox continued, “Our Michigan businesses are the backbone of our state, and it is very reassuring that they have an ally in the legislature and a light at the end of this tunnel.” More >

MIGOP Statement on Democrats Blocking Small Business Relief

The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox regarding Senate Democrats’ choice to block a vote on additional small business relief funding: “Our nation is going through an unprecedented emergency, and small businesses will need these additional funds to weather this crisis. However, as per usual Gary Peters and Senate Democrats would rather play political games. It’s time for Gary Peters to put people above politics and work with Republicans to help Michigan small business and the millions of Michiganders they employ.” More >

MIGOP Statement on Bernie Sanders Withdrawal from Democrat Primary

The following statement is from Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox regarding Bernie Sanders’ withdrawal from the 2020 Presidential Race: “With Bernie Sanders' decision to drop out of the 2020 Presidential Primary, Democrats are left with their weakest nominee for president since Walter Mondale. Just like Ronald Regan in 1984, I am confident that President Trump, with his outstanding record of accomplishment, will soundly defeat Joe Biden - a two-time failed presidential candidate and washed-up former Vice President of a disastrous administration.” More >

President Trump is Providing Support to America’s Healthcare Providers

Throughout the course of the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump and his administration have ensured that America’s healthcare providers have all the resources necessary as they fight this virus on the front lines. “I would like to thank our medical professionals who are on the frontlines of the fight against this invisible enemy, and President Trump and his administration for giving them the tools they need to win that fight.” said Laura Cox, Michigan Republican Party Chairman. Cox continued, “The president has kept his promise to spare no resource in this fight and the whole-of-government approach is working to get the American people the aid they need.” The President has extended the White House and CDC guidelines to slow the spread until April 30. President Trump signed legislation providing $100 billion for our nation’s healthcare providers, including hospitals on the frontlines of this outbreak. The President took action so his Administration could waive certain laws and regulations in order to give healthcare providers maximum flexibility. CMS issued regulatory changes to help increase hospital capacity, expand the healthcare workforce, and cut paperwork so doctors can focus on patients. The Administration lifted HIPAA penalties to enable healthcare providers to expand telehealth access for patients. Over 1.8 million tests have been conducted nationwide. No nation has developed a more robust testing capacity. 1,200 Abbott Machines have been shipped to hospitals nationwide and 500 more are being produced weekly. The Army Corps of Engineers is building 22 field hospitals and alternate care sites in 18 states.... More >

MIGOP Statement on Legislature Upholding Their Constitutional Duty

The Michigan Republican Party released the following statement on behalf of Chairman Laura Cox after the Michigan Legislature’s vote to extend the governor’s Emergency Powers. “I would like to thank all of our Representatives and Senators, who took upholding their constitutional duty seriously and showed up to vote today. As we work through these difficult times, we cannot let the rule of law fall by the wayside. I am deeply grateful for Speaker Chatfield and Majority Leader Shirkey’s leadership which is helping to ensure that the Michigan government continues to function and serve its citizens even in these times of uncertainty.” More >
